Sorrento, 2 September – Finally in a dramatic climatic change Italy has been hit with a wave of cold weather which spells the end of one of the hottest summers for 50 years. After two months of extreme heat with hardly any rain throughout the Peninsula violent storms have hit north and south of Italy causing in some parts major damage due to flooding, large hail and strong winds. This has been a welcome change and major relief for the Italians.
The start of our Grand Tour of Italy not withstanding the heat, in Sorrento we were treated with a spectacular lightning display over the bay of Naples and Vesuvius from the balcony of our hotel.
There are still nine million Italians on holiday and after this weekend they will start making their way home to begin work and school. Autumn is upon us.
