The seaside city of Pesaro in Le Marche Region is not a location that comes to mind when we think of award winning Neapolitan Pizza. Nearly 500kms from Naples, the birthplace of the modern pizza, we find La Macelleria – Cucina & Pizza. A humble restaurant known for using only high-quality ingredients has recently been awarded Best Traditional Neapolitan Pizza at the 2024 World Pizza Championships.
Located in the historical centre of Pesaro in Le Marche Region of Italy, Umberto Carriera, owner of La Macelleria together with his pizzaioli Eduardo Barone and Gianfranco Tinto, have built a traditional Restaurant-Pizzeria based on heritage, variety and quality. Popular with locals and visiting travellers alike, we wanted to shine a light on this dining gem in Pesaro, a destination close to our heart.
Lets Talk Pizza
Coming off from being recognised at the World Pizza Championships, the pizza options at La Macelleria are endless, there are twenty-three varieties to be exact. They are cooked in a wood-fired oven with a Neapolitan style base, less-is-more toppings at an oven temperature of above 370oC, for 90 seconds. It is no wonder La Macelleria pride themselves in traditional pizza making with the achievement now placing them on the world stage.
It is just another accolade to add to the City’s 2024 achievements. Pesaro is being celebrated as the Italian Capital of Culture 2024, chosen by the Minister of Culture, based on Pesaro’s rich heritage around tradition, culture and social values.
We thought we’d sample the award winning pizza for ourselves
Nina and Gianni of Vita Italian Tours recently caught up with the team at La Macelleria – Cucina & Pizza. ‘It is located in a very quiet and unassuming side street in the heart of the historical centre of the city, and with the weather starting to get warmer we chose to sit outside which was great for watching the local life and interactions from locals in the neighbourhood’. They went with two of their award winning pizzas, La Bufalina and La Nuova Napoli together with a local artisan beer served on tap.
