Top Experiences on the Amalfi Coast – Our Ultimate Travel Guide
The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy’s most enchanting destinations, where dramatic cliffs, elegant villages, and azure waters create an unforgettable Mediterranean escape. For travellers seeking luxury, culture, convenience, and adventure, these six experiences showcase the very best of this spectacular coastline.
(We tried to make it a top 5 – BUT there are just too many wonderful experiences so had to squeeze in some more!)
1. Pompeii: Walk through history – preserved for all time
Nestled near the Bay of Naples, Pompeii Archaeological Park offers one of the most extraordinary journeys into the ancient world. Buried under volcanic ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, the city was remarkably preserved, providing a vivid snapshot of daily life in the Roman Empire. Wander along ancient streets, explore beautifully preserved villas, temples, baths, and theatres, and view haunting plaster casts of residents caught in the disaster. With new excavations continually being uncovered there is always a reason to return to this ancient wonder.
2. Sorrento: Explore Sorrento’s Coastal Charm
Overlooking the sparkling Bay of Naples, Sorrento is the ideal base for exploring the Amalfi Coast. With its cliff-top setting, charming historic centre, and elegant atmosphere, the town blends authentic Italian character with effortless convenience. Stroll cobbled streets lined with boutiques and cafés, sample locally made limoncello and soak up sweeping views towards Mount Vesuvius. Sorrento’s relaxed sophistication makes it a favourite among travellers seeking comfort, culture, and coastal beauty. Our top pick for Limoncello tasting in the historical centre of Sorrento is Limonoro, a family institution. Don’t stop at the liquors, make sure you try the amazing limoncello chocolates and biscuits as well. For an authentic artisan-made memento from your time in Sorrento you can’t go past Augusto & Luca’s Inlaid Wood Workshop for quality handmade treasures. Then when you have built up an appetite, one of our favourite things to do is take a short walk down from the historical centre to Marina Grande, the ancient fishing village of Sorrento. Think quaint colourful houses, traditional fishing boats and seafront restaurants where you can savour a meal and glass of wine with the sounds of waves lapping the shore. Enjoy a classic ‘fritto misto’ or ‘spaghetti alle vongole’ while taking in the view of the Bay of Naples and Mt Vesuvius.
3. Cruise to Capri and the Blue Grotto
A private boat cruise is one of the most memorable ways to experience the Amalfi Coast. Avoid the often large crowds, depart from Amalfi or Positano and glide past colourful villages, secluded coves, and hidden beaches accessible only by sea. Besides the unique vantage points you will have the opportunity to have dip in the Bay of Naples right off the boat.
The highlight is the glamorous island of Capri, renowned for its designer boutiques, chic cafés, and breathtaking scenery. Be sure to visit the iconic Blue Grotto, where sunlight illuminates the water in a mesmerising shade of electric blue.
If you have more time, don’t stop just at Capri – make time to explore some of the other picturesque islands on the Amalfi Coast such as Ischia and Procida. They are reachable by local ferry or private boat.

4. Wander the Charming Streets of Positano
No visit to the Amalfi Coast is complete without exploring Positano. Often considered the jewel of the coastline, this picturesque village is famous for its pastel-coloured houses cascading down steep cliffs to the sea.
Browse artisan boutiques, shop for handmade sandals and ceramics, enjoy a long lunch overlooking the Mediterranean, or relax on Spiaggia Grande. Positano perfectly embodies the timeless glamour that has drawn visitors here for generations. Our recommendation is to avoid the summer months which can be quite crowded in Positano with locals and foreign travellers alike. Try and favour early Spring or Autumn months, the weather may not be as warm but the narrow streets of Positano become easier to explore.
5. Discover Ravello’s Historic Villas and Gardens
High above the coastline, Ravello offers some of the most spectacular views in Italy. This elegant hilltop retreat provides a peaceful escape from the bustling seaside towns below.
A visit to Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone is essential. Their magnificent gardens, historic architecture, and panoramic terraces offer unforgettable views across the Mediterranean. The famed Terrace of Infinity at Villa Cimbrone is widely regarded as one of the Amalfi Coast’s most breathtaking viewpoints.
Continuing on from Ravello are also the small coastal towns of Maiori and Cetara which reward intrepid travellers looking for a more relaxed experience away from the many crowds in the peak summer season.
6. Explore Amalfi and Its Rich Maritime Heritage
The historic town of Amalfi offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s storied past. Once a powerful maritime republic, Amalfi combines centuries of history with coastal charm.
At its heart stands the impressive Amalfi Cathedral, with its grand staircase and striking architecture. Wander through the old town, discover traditional paper-making workshops, and enjoy an aperitivo along the waterfront as local life unfolds around you. For a genuine souvenir made from hand-made Amalfi Paper we recommend La Scuderia del Duca which has an amazing selection of leatherbound diaries, notebooks, artworks, bookmarks, prints and antiques. A visit to Amalfi is not complete without stopping for a coffee and dolce at the historic Pasticceria Pansa which has been serving delicious cakes, biscuits and sweets since 1830. We recommend the Babà Napoletano or their famous chocolate covered candied lemon peels a speciality of the Amalfi area.

An Italian Escape to Remember
From the historical wonders of Pompeii to the elegance of Sorrento and the glamour of Capri, from the charm of Positano to the gardens of Ravelo and the rich history of Amalfi, the Amalfi Coast offers a perfect blend of luxury, culture, and breath-taking scenery. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, exploration, or a touch of Mediterranean indulgence, this iconic stretch of coastline promises memories that will linger long after you’ve returned home.
