Eight-Hundred Years of History in a Bottle

Posted 28 May, 2025 By Gianni

Located near one of the most beautiful squares of Florence is an historic and cultural gem, a storefront that has been around since before the time of Michelangelo and the rise of the Medici. The Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, is one of the oldest pharmacies in the world. Established in 1221 by Dominican friars, it has become a symbol of the rich historical and cultural heritage of Florence, blending the arts of perfumery and pharmaceuticals in a unique and timeless institution.

Its fascinating origins & history

The origins of the workshop can be traced back to the early 13th century when Dominican friars at the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella began cultivating medicinal herbs in their gardens. These herbs were used to prepare balms, salves, and ointments for the monastery’s infirmary. The friars’ knowledge of herbal medicine and their commitment to healing the sick laid the foundation for what would become an enduring legacy.

In 1612, the workshop opened its doors to the public, and its reputation quickly spread beyond the walls of the monastery. The Medici family, renowned patrons of the arts and sciences, were among the workshop’s most distinguished clients.

The Workshop today

The Perfume-Pharmaceutical Workshop of Santa Maria Novella continues to operate in the heart of Florence. The workshop’s interior is a treasure trove of history, with frescoes, antique furniture, and intricate woodwork that transport visitors to another era. The museum section showcases the rich heritage of the workshop, displaying ancient manuscripts, apothecary jars, and other artifacts that tell the story of its illustrious past.

Visitors to the workshop can also explore the beautiful gardens where the friars once cultivated their medicinal herbs. These gardens, meticulously maintained, offer a serene escape and a glimpse into the natural sources of the workshop’s products.

Explore Melbourne’s own Santa Maria Novella

For our Australian readers, in Melbourne’s Royal Arcade, just underneath the Cog & Magog Clock, you find Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella’s Melbourne Boutique store.  As soon as you open the door – your senses will be lifted and transported back to the original  Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica in Florence. The store is styled to replicate the original store in Florence from its old wooden floor, to the incredibly ornate wall paper and even the stylish shelving. The fragrant smells, the beautiful packaging and variety of product will have you exploring this store for more than one lunch break.  The service is excellent – staff are incredibly passionate and  knowledgeable of the history, the legacy and of course the product (with many of the original products for sale, developed from recipes dating back to before the Federation of Australia).

I must admit, I did feel like I might be one of the few Melbournians who was not aware of this shopping delight.  While I was there I watched many customers entering the store and leaving with large bags of product, tourists taking photo’s outside the store (and inside as well), and though I didn’t see it, apparently Brides and Grooms have taken one or two of their wedding photos inside this Melbourne store.   Don’t miss visiting this Melbourne Boutique on a day when you can take the time to simply enjoy and experience a little bit of Florence in your own backyard.

If you find yourself in Melbourne you can visit the boutique at Royal Arcade, Shop 25, 331/339 Bourke Street.
